Early on Monday, the Dodgers’ Los Angeles Times beat writer, Jorge Castillo, reported that Andrew Toles would not be reporting for the team’s first official full-team workout on Tuesday the 19th. Castillo said the absence was due to a “personal matter,” and that the team was unaware of when Toles would be ready to return.
Andrew Toles has suffered a spell of bad luck over the past few years, but is without a doubt worth a starting role on almost any team in baseball. In 115 plate appearances in 2016, Toles batted a scorching .314 to average, sporting a very strong 131 wRC+.
Team Manager, Dave Roberts, told reports who asked about Toles’ absence that the 26 year old outfielder has the team’s “full support,” through whatever his personal matter may be.
In mid-2018, Toles opened up to Pedro Moura, a writer for The Athletic, about some of his mental health issues and the defining moments of his career that impacted his anxiety and depression. While nothing is certain, this may point towards the “personal matter’ that Castillo talked about in his tweet on Monday morning.
We here at Dodgers-LowDown all admire Toles for his unmatched level of fearlessness on the field, and hope only the best for Andrew as he deals with what he is going through.
