Bellinger X-Rays Return Negative After Hit-By-Pitch Versus Reds

During the third inning of the Dodgers’ 4-3 win over the Reds at Chavez Ravine on Monday, Luis Castillo of the Reds let go of a 95.5 MPH fastball at the knees of Cody Bellinger.

The pitch, Castillo’s fourteenth of the inning, sailed inside on Bellinger and hit him flush on the side of his right knee, knocking him to the ground and forcing him out of the game after the conclusion of the inning.

Bellinger stayed in to take his base and attempt to walk off the pain after being tended to by the Dodgers’ training staff. Bellinger led off of first base, but a ball was never hit into play for him to run the bases on. Bellinger was replaced by Alex Verdugo in the field the following inning before heading to the clubhouse for further evaluation.

Following the conclusion of Monday’s game, a number of different sources on Twitter confirmed with Dave Roberts, the team’s manager, that Bellinger’s x-rays of his right knee came up negative, meaning there were no broken bones or torn ligaments found when the medical team looked it over.

However, early speculation suggests that Bellinger will end up with a knee contusion, which take anywhere from two to eight weeks to heal completely, according to similar injuries seen in baseball before.

Dave Roberts spoke about Bellinger’s situation, saying that following being hit by Castillo’s fastball, this was the “best case scenario” for where Bellinger is at injury-wise.
