DLD Recap: Colorado plays small ball to beat the Dodgers, 6-3

The Dodgers opened the final road game of the 2020 regular season looking to sweep the Colorado Rockies and potentially clinch their 8th straight division title.  The Rockies pitching staff, led by starter Antonio Senzatela, had other ideas; they shut down the Dodgers offense and paved the way to a 6-3 over the Boys in Blue.  The Dodgers’ final 2020 record in division play is 27-13. Their magic number remains at 2.

The Dodgers offense was ice cold for most of the game, earning only one run (on an Edwin Rios single) through the first eight innings. The offense did show life in the 9th, scoring two runs, but the rally came up short. Starter Tony Gonsolin, however, came out blazing.  He retired the first nine Rockies he faced, striking out the first six batters.  The Rockies finally got to Gonsolin in the 4th by playing small ball, scoring 2 runs.  Gonsolin went five innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out 10.  Unfortunately, the Rockies roughed up the bullpen for four more runs.

Bot 4th: Josh Fuentes 2-run single (2-0 COL)

Bot 6th: Josh Fuentes RBI single (3-0 COL)

Bot 6th: Elias Diaz RBI single (4-0 COL)

Bot 6th: Ryan McMah0n RBI single (5-0 COL)

Top 7th: Edwin Rios RBI single (5-1 COL)

Bot 8th: Elias Diaz RBI on a force out (6-1 COL)

Top 9th: AJ Pollock 2-run single (6-3 COL) Final

Today’s play of the game goes to rookie Zach McKinstry, who smacked a double for his first major league hit.

The DLD player of the game is AJ Pollock, who drove in two runs on an RBI single in the 9th, bringing the Dodgers within striking distance.

The Dodgers will have a travel day on Monday, and will open the final homestand of the 2020 regular season against the playoff-bound Oakland Athletics.  The Dodgers are scheduled to start Dustin May (1-1, 2.68 ERA, 34 SPO).  The Athletics have yet to name their starter.  Game time will be 6:40 pm and will be on SportsNet LA and AM570.
