NLCS Game One Deep Dive: You Can’t Win If You Don’t Score (More)
October 13, 2020NLCS Game Two Deep Dive: We’ve Seen This Movie Before, Dodgers
October 13, 2020Post-Game Briefing
The Dodgers came into Game 2 of the NCLS looking to avenge last night’s late inning heartbreaker. Unfortunately, despite a great comeback attempt by the Dodgers, who scored four runs in the 9th inning, they fell one run short and the Braves won, 8-7. Atlanta leads the NCLS 2-0.
The Dodgers originally scheduled Clayton Kershaw as their Game 2 starter, but back spasms forced manager dave Roberts to replace him with Tony Gonsolin (who, in his only appearance against the Braves, tossed four innings of one-hit ball). Gonsolin opened strong, pitching three shutout innings. The Braves adjusted, and unleashed on Gonsolin – and then the bullpen – scoring six runs in the 4th and 5th innings. In total, Dodgers pitching gave up eight runs on 10 hits while striking out 12 and walking seven.
On the offensive side the ball, Dodgers bats continued to have trouble figuring out Braves pitching for most of the game. They were held scoreless until Corey Seager hit a mammoth three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Dodgers came into the 9th down 8-3 when the improbable almost happened. Corey Seager opened the scoring with a double, and Max Muncy followed with a two-run dinger. A fielding error that allowed Will Smith to reach first and a triple by Cody Bellinger put the Dodgers within a run. However, a ground out by AJ Pollock ended the game, and the rally.
