The Dodgers have announced that they have designated for assignment RHP Yadier Alvarez. Yesterday Alvarez was a late scratch after, “he didn’t feel like himself.” Alvarez once was once considered one of the top prospects in baseball and ranked #7 in the Dodgers system in 2018. The Dodgers signed 19-year-old Cuban right-handed pitcher during the international signing period to a $16 million bonus, the second-largest bonus ever paid to an amateur at the time. In 2019, he was added to the 40-man roster. He threw a fastball that at times could reach 100 MPH. However, Alvarez spent the last season on the restricted list due to personal matters. Despite once having high trade value, Alvarez has just never been able to put it together on the field and off the field. The Dodgers now have 7 days to trade him, and then allow him to clear waivers. He is just one week away from turning 24. If no team claims Alvarez, then it’s possible the Dodgers bring him back to a new minor league deal.
Update: Yadier Alvarez felt discomfort in his shoulder/lat area during warmups before his Friday appearance according to Bill Plunkett of the OC Register.
Alvarez felt discomfort in the right shoulder/lat area while warming up to enter Friday's game in Maryvale. Expected to have MRI soon. Because he has no MLB service time, LAD had right to DFA him before an upcoming deadline.
