Things seemed to get off to a rough start for Walker Buehler and the Dodgers Tuesday night when Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes hit what appeared to be a home run. It technically was a home run except for one problem:
Hayes, 24, missed the first base bag on his way to home plate.
You might be wondering how this happened at the Big-League level. Hayes watched the ball closely, seeing it narrowly clear the fence for a home run. If you were paying attention to the ball you wouldn’t have noticed that Hayes did not touch first base on his way to second; instead going around it.
The Dodgers noticed it though, and a challenge was made. They easily won the appeal and the game remained scoreless in the 1st inning.
Hayes is one of the Pirates’ top prospects and is likely to learn from this mistake. For the season he is hitting .376/.442/.682 with two home run and five RBIs in 24 games.
What would have been a solo home run would not have mattered as the Dodgers went on to win 5-3.
