Dodgers’ relief pitcher Edwin Uceta was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers announced Monday. In a corresponding move, outfielder Zach Reks was recalled to the Dodgers.
The 27-year old Reks — who has spent five seasons in the Dodgers’ organization since being drafted in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft — would make his major league debut upon his first appearance.
Reks has been off to a torrid start down with OKC this season, hitting .341 with five HR and 19 RBIs in 32 games.
Uceta has shown flashes of potential, but has been inconsistent over his time in Los Angeles this season. In eight appearances with the Dodgers, Uceta has posted an 0-2 record with a 6.28 ERA. Additionally, he pitched 1.2 innings yesterday, allowing five runs and walking two in the Dodgers’ 9-8 win over the Diamondbacks.
This could both give Uceta a chance to find his form again, and it’s an opportunity to see what Reks can do at the MLB level. It remains to be seen what impact he can have, but given the success of Andy Burns and Steven Souza Jr. since their callups, the Dodgers do have a track record this year of getting impact bats off the bench from callups this year.
Reks is listed on the Dodgers’ active roster as wearing No. 84.
