Start the Rally: Tweet This Now!The Los Angeles Dodgers have made yet another splash this offseason by officially signing Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim to a three-year deal worth $12.5 million, with an option for a two-year extension that could increase the total value to $22 million. The 25-year-old brings versatility and defensive excellence to an already stacked Dodgers roster, further solidifying their position as World Series contenders in 2025.
Kim, a former standout for the Kiwoom Heroes in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), has built a reputation as one of the most versatile infielders in international baseball. Over eight KBO seasons, Kim posted a .304 batting average, with 37 home runs, 386 RBIs, and 211 stolen bases. He’s won four KBO Golden Gloves for overall performance at second base. Kim also received the prestigious Fielding Award in 2023 and 2024, recognizing him as the league’s top defensive second baseman.
Interestingly, Kim’s contract includes a provision that omits his right to refuse to be optioned to the minor leagues, according to Kim Jae-ho of MK Sports. This stipulation gives the Dodgers added roster flexibility, allowing them to send Kim to the minors if necessary without his approval. This clause aligns with the Dodgers’ penchant for roster maneuverability and ensures that Kim remains a valuable asset in the majors and minors.
The Dodgers edged out several MLB teams in signing Kim, including the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs. Reports initially claimed that the Los Angeles Angels offered Kim a lucrative $28 million deal, but Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reported the contrary, stating that the Angels’ offer was lower than the Dodgers’. This discrepancy highlights the intrigue surrounding Kim’s signing, adding another layer to the hot stove drama.
To accommodate Kim on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers unexpectedly decided to designate catcher Diego Cartaya for assignment. Once considered the team’s top prospect, Cartaya was highly regarded for his defensive skills and power potential but has struggled with injuries and inconsistent performance at the plate. This move marks a significant shift for the Dodgers, who appear willing to prioritize immediate roster flexibility over long-term prospect development.
The Dodgers had been eyeing Kim even before he was posted this offseason. Manager Dave Roberts noted Kim’s potential in March 2024 during a game against the Korean national team in Seoul, saying, “Our scouts like the second baseman: just the way his body moves. There’s some life to the bat and defensively, he made a nice play out there.” Kim’s signing represents a strategic acquisition for the Dodgers, who continue to prioritize versatility and depth across their roster. With his defensive skills and ability to contribute offensively, Kim is expected to provide valuable support across the infield while giving the team roster flexibility.
