Dodgers outfield prospect Zyhir Hope was named the player likeliest to become the MLB Pipeline Breakout Prospect in the upcoming season in a poll conducted to all 30 MLB organizations.

Hope, turning 20 on January 19, was acquired by the Dodgers on January 11, 2024, along with LHP Jackson Ferris from the Cubs in exchange for 2B Michael Busch and RHP Yency Almonte.

As fans continue to analyze the trade the Dodgers made Monday with the Reds to acquire outfield prospect Mike Sirota in exchange for Gavin Lux, this is another trade where Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman chose his pieces carefully with an eye on the future.

Hope played in seven games for the Dodgers’ rookie-league squad, hitting .316/.458/.421 with five RBIs and four runs scored.

From there he was promoted to the Dodgers’ Single-A affiliate, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, with whom he hit .287/.415/.490 with nine HRs, 31 RBIs and eight stteals in 54 games.

MLB Pipeline says of Hope:

“A player like Zyhir Hope, who led all votitng, is a super high-ceiling player with exciting tools. He hasn’t put it all together yet, but there’s some expectation that it could all start clicking during the 2025 season.”

In RotoProspects’ newest top 700 prospect rankings released on January 3, Hope is ranked No. 15 overall, and the No. 7 outfielder. He is the No. 4 prospect at his age, and trails only Padres shortstop Leodalis De Vries in Low-A rankings.

MLB Pipeline rates hope as the No. 11 prospect in the Dodgers organization, with a 2027 projection for big-league promotion. He stands 5-foot-10 and 193 pounds.

Many teams passed on Hope because he didn’t participate much in the MLB Showcase circuit entering the 2023 Draft. It was thought he would not go the Major Leagues before attending college at the University of North Carolina.

The Dodgers had reportedly planned on selecting Hope in the 11th round, but were too late, as the Cubs picked him 14 selections earlier. Instead, the Dodgers drafted pitcher Carson Hobbs from Samford.

Fans may be able to look at 30-30 upside with Hope, as his scouting report calls him a twitchy athlete with a beautiful left-handed stroke that can produce 110 mph exit velocities. He chases a lot outside the zone, though.

Hope did have a mid-90s fastball and a decent curveball, according to the scouting report.

Hope is rated with the following attributes per MLB Pipeline (out of a scale of 80):

  • Hitting: 50
  • Power: 55
  • Run: 70
  • Arm: 65
  • Fielding: 55
  • Overall: 50
