Start the Rally: Tweet This Now!The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed former New York Yankees pitching prospect Matt Sauer to a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to Spring Training.
Sauer, 25, was drafted by the Yankees in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft and has shown flashes of promise despite struggles in 2024.
Last season, Sauer spent time with the Kansas City Royals after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft but posted a challenging 7.71 ERA across 14 games. He returned to the Yankees’ organization midseason and split time between Triple-A and Double-A. At Double-A Somerset, Sauer rebounded, recording a 2.63 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 24 innings.
Sauer features a five-pitch arsenal led by a four-seam fastball, which opponents hit well last year. However, his sinker and split-finger offerings showed potential, which the Dodgers’ renowned pitching development staff will look to refine.
The Dodgers have been aggressive in adding depth this offseason, previously signing players like David Bote and Sam Carlson to minor league deals.
Sauer’s signing aligns with the team’s strategy of building organizational depth with low-risk, high-reward options.
With Spring Training approaching, Sauer will aim to impress and secure a role within the Dodgers’ pitching staff. If he can regain consistency, Sauer could emerge as a valuable depth piece in 2025.
