Monday’s News and Notes

Tonight, the Los Angeles Dodgers kick off a three-game series against the Rockies in Colorado. Kenta Maeda, with a record of 7-7 and a 3.81 ERA toes the rubber against Colorado’s ace, Jon Gray, who owns a 9-7 record with a 4.05 ERA.  The Dodgers have dominated Colorado this season, to the tune of an 8-2 head-to-head record.

With the trade deadline fastly approaching, the Dodgers have begun making adjustments, with a few roster moves. Here are the news and notes ahead of tonight’s series opener in juiced ball central.

Los Angeles Dodgers sign RHP Tyler Thornburg

On Monday morning, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed 30-year-old reliever, Tyler Thornburg to a minor league contract. Thornburg, who was traded to the Boston Red Sox prior to the 2018 season, was released a few days ago, after being designated for assignment.

Thornburg’s time in Boston was massively disappointing, but Los Angeles is hoping he can right the ship on a low risk, high reward deal. Thornburg was one of the league’s better set up men during his tenure in Milwaukee.

Despite his astronomical 7.71 ERA in a Red Sox uniform this season, Thornburg’s spin rate on both his fastball and curveball are off the charts. Los Angeles clearly loves his peripherals and they believe they may be able to revive his career.

Los Angeles Dodgers trade LHP Zac Rosscup to St. Louis Cardinals

The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations. The trade places Rosscup on his fourth team just this season.

Through 18 innings this season, Rosscup owns an ERA of 5, with a WHIP of 2.28. Aside from that, he has one of the worst fastball spin rates in all of baseball. He simply had no place on this Dodgers roster that is trying to get back to another World Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers Acquire Utility Player Kris Negron from Seattle Mariners and place Kike Hernandez on 10-Day IL

Last night, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired utility guy, Kris Negron from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league infielder Daniel Castro. In a corresponding move, Los Angeles has placed fan-favorite utility guy, Kike Hernandez on the 10-day IL with a left-hand sprain.

Negron has played every position except pitcher and catcher at the major league level, though that may change with the way the Dodgers manage players. With both Taylor and Hernandez unavailable, it is clear that the Dodgers have a need for a professional ballplayer who gives the team depth up the middle.

Los Angeles Dodgers recalled RHP Josh Sborz and Option RHP Jaime Schultz to OKC

The Dodgers have recalled righty reliever Josh Sborz and optioned fellow righty Jaime Schultz to triple-A OKC.

Schultz is headed back to the minors after logging in a whopping five innings in the show. Sborz is likely a placeholder for this series against Colorado until Los Angeles makes an inevitable deal for a pitcher or two ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

Neither Sborz nor Schultz are likely to make the postseason roster, though we may see both of them again this September.
