Today all 30 major league teams must decide by 3 p.m. PT which eligible players in their farm systems they want to protect from potentially getting selected in next month’s Rule-5 Draft.
Players eligible for the Rule-5 Draft are those who were signed at age 18 or younger and have played professional baseball for 5 years or those who were signed at age 19 or older and have played professional baseball for 4 years. If a team decides to protect an eligible player from potentially being selected, they must add the player to their 40-man roster. Those who are not added to the 40-man roster will not be protected.
There are two phases of the Rule-5 Draft, the major league phase and the minor league phase.
For the major league phase, teams pay $100,000 to select a player. That player must then remain on the major league roster for the entire season barring injury. If that player doesn’t stay on the active roster for the entire season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000 and can be outrighted to the minors only if the player’s original club does not wish to reacquire him.
For the minor league phase, there are two phases which are the Triple-A and Double-A phases. For the Triple-A phase, teams pay $12,000 to select a player. For the Double-A phase teams play $4,000 to select a player. However, unlike the major league phase, players selected during the minor league phase do not have to remain on an active roster of a certain level for the entire season.
For the Dodgers, they have 13 players who are eligible for this year’s Rule-5 Draft.
