Quick Hit: Full Details on AJ Pollock’s 5-year, $60 Million Contract

Late last week, the Dodgers made it official that AJ Pollock had passed his physical and his deal with the Dodgers would be official. As of this morning, the full breakdown on Pollock’s contract was announced by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

AJ Pollock, 31 years old, told reporters at his signing press conference that the Dodgers were his number one choice in free agency this year, and he was glad to see the feeling was mutual. Pollock has been suggested to be an everyday player in 2019 by Dodgers’ President of Baseball Operations, Andrew Friedman, although the team has the depth to weather the blow of an injury to Pollock, should that occur.

Per-Year Contract Breakdown

  • 2019: $1M
  • 2020: $12M
  • 2021: $15M
  • 2022: $10M
  • 2023: $10M player option OR $5M buyout

In 2019, Pollock will receive a $12M signing bonus, and has a clause to opt out after 2021 and still get the $5M buyout if he accumulates 1,450 plate appearances in the 2019-2021 seasons.

Pollock’s contract also includes escalating incentives. These incentives include turning his 2023 player option of $10M into a $15M option if Pollock records 600 plate appearances in 2022. This could jump up to $20M depending where Pollock finishes in the 2022 MVP race.
