Tuesday morning, just hours away from the 2019 MLB trade deadline, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported on Twitter that the Dodgers are “likely to add a reliever” by the deadline tomorrow afternoon. Morosi mentioned Pirates’ closer, Felipe Vazquez, and Tigers’ closer, Shane Greene, in this report as players the Dodgers are heavily pursuing.
Vazquez, who won’t be eligible for free agency until 2022, has posted very good numbers for the Pirates this season. The 28 year old left-hander has pitched his way to a 1.87 ERA over 40 outings, collecting 21 saves. Vazquez has been nothing short of incredible for a Pirates team that is still in the battle for a playoff spot.
Greene, who debuted in the MLB with the Yankees in 2014, has been arguably the best closer in the American League this year, holding a 1.18 ERA in 38 appearances. Greene currently has 22 saves to his credit, which ranks fourth among AL closers.
The MLB trade deadline goes into effect Wednesday, July 31st at 1:00 PM PT.
