With an additional 50+ players being non-tendered as of Monday 12/2/19. Sources indicate the Dodgers plan to be aggressive with the new additions to the free agent market with one of those players being RHP Kevin Gausman who was let go by the Cincinnati Reds. He was expected to make $10.5 million under contract in 2020.
Gausman did not have a good 2019 season after splitting time between the Braves and Reds accumulating a 3-9 record and 5.72 ERA over 102 IP and was eventually moved to the bullpen. While with the Reds in 2019, he had a 3.17 FIP, 11.7 K/9 and 114 ERA+. The Dodgers selected Guasman in the 6th round of the 2010 Major League draft, but he chose not to sign. He was eventually drafted 4th overall in the 1st round by the O’s in 2012 and made his MLB debut one year later. With a career 47-63 record and 4.30 ERA, there is actually reason to like Gausman.
If the Dodgers were to sign him, he gives them the flexibility of being both a reliever and starting pitcher. Kevin Gausman will throw one of the best splitters in baseball right now, his issue has always been location and mixing it in with his fastball. His ability to pitch multiple innings out of the pen and make spot starts would be a nice weapon to have.
