TL;DR - Scouting Report
Mookie Betts Can’t Keep Food Down: The Dodgers superstar revealed he vomited again Sunday morning and still hasn’t been able to eat a full meal in over a week. He’s lost 15 pounds and says, “I just want to play.”
Start the Rally: Tweet This Now!For the fifth time this spring, Mookie Betts was scratched from the Dodgers’ lineup — but now we know why.
After being removed from Sunday’s exhibition lineup against the Angels, Betts admitted he vomited after breakfast and still hasn’t been able to eat a full meal in over a week. The superstar shortstop said he’s lost “nearly 15 pounds” since falling ill during the team’s Tokyo trip.
“So looks like I’m just going to be light for a little bit,” Betts said. “Maybe I play uphill a little bit for the beginning of the season. But I just want to play, man. I’m tired of sitting, tired of just throwing up, tired of doing all this. I just really just want to play.”
Manager Dave Roberts confirmed Betts was scratched Sunday after he was once again unable to keep food down.
This isn’t the flu. And it’s clearly more than a 24-hour bug.
Betts hasn’t suited up in nearly two weeks, and Opening Day is around the corner. The Dodgers are loaded — featuring a lineup with Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez and Will Smith among others — but Mookie sets the tone. He’s their shortstop, and in many ways, their heartbeat.
The good news? He wants to play. The bad news? His body isn’t ready.
If he does play Opening Day, how long until he looks like Mookie again?
